It has been over a month since West Virginia was hit by the worst flood in a century. However, West Virginians are still in a state of recovery—many without homes to return to. If you want to donate any supplies to help support those victims, you can drop them off here at Joe Holland Chevrolet. All materials donated will go directly to West Virginia flood relief.

Some of the most needed items include water, toiletries, cleaning supplies, batteries, diapers, baby food, baby formula, and non-perishable food items. In addition, families with pets are in need of bags of dog and cat food. The website West Virginia Flood keeps an updated list of the most needed items. As of July 20th, urgent needs include box fans, leather gloves, goggles and safety glasses, wheelbarrows, and garden sprayers.

If you want to take a more hands-on approach to helping those in need, you can volunteer your time. Sign up to volunteer with the West Virginia Red Cross or other non-profit organizations.

For more information on what items we are accepting and where you can take them, call us a Joe Holland Chevrolet. Our phone number is 304-744-1561.

Plan a Road Trip to Kings Island

Nothing says summer fun quite like a trip to an amusement park. One of the best parks in the country is located just three hours from South Charleston—Kings Island in Mason, Ohio. If you want to plan a road trip to Kings Island, here are a few things you need to do.

  • Tickets. Make sure you buy your tickets before you go. There are numerous online deals available so you can save a ton. Much better than paying gate prices.
  • Overnight stay. While you could make the trip there and back all in one day, you’ll likely be exhausted after a full day at the park. There are numerous hotels located just next to the park. You could even stay at the Great Wolf Lodge, which has its own indoor waterpark.
  • Clothes. You’ll be doing a lot of walking and waiting all day long. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes and clothes.
  • Sun protection. Spending hours walking in the sun can not only leave you feeling worn out, but could leave you burned. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to keep you cool and protected.

Have you ever been to Kings Island before? What is your favorite ride or attraction?

Three Offbeat West Virginia Travel Destinations

2016 Chevy Colorado

Let’s say you are getting ready to hit the road and all the usual attractions just seem…boring. Try these offbeat West Virginia travel destinations instead!

# 1 – Lake Shawnee Amusement Park – Princeton, WV

# 2 – Mothman Statue – Point Pleasant, WV

The story of the Mothman came to prominence when the film The Mothman Prophecies starring Richard Gere depicted certain events that occurred in Point Pleasant in 1966, when a number of people reported seeing a shadowy figure with moth wings. When a bridge connecting West Virginia with Ohio, a lot of people saw a connection. Today, a statue resembling the creature has been erected downtown.

# 3 – West Virginia State Penitentiary – Moundsville, WV

This prison was actually forcibly closed when the Supreme Court ruled that the cells were too small and represented “cruel and unusual punishment.” After being closed for a while, the prison has reopened as a museum of sorts. You can even stay the night one night a month for a “ghost hunt.”
